Expiration SPX options that expire on the third Friday stop trading the day before the third Friday (the third Thursday). On the third Friday, the settlement price is determined by the opening prices of each of the index's stocks. WebIf you sold a 100 put, and on expiration day the stock is at 110, the put will be worth very little near market close, so you can buy to close it for a small amount, say .01 or .05. If you don't buy to close it, and at 4:01 the stock tanks to 75, the option holder can assign you shares at 100 after hours.
